SHOCKED! Part Two‏

If you connect directly with the Light without the careful use of restriction (the decision not to have immediate gratification), you will reenact what happened in the Endless World when the Light fed the Vessel (without fulfillment) and created Bread of Shame (if these terms are unfamiliar, I explain them in The Power of Kabbalah.)

If you satisfy your desire right away without first becoming the cause of your life, the experience will burn you out. But that immediate delight can be so seductive that we find ourselves engaging in the same behavior again and again and again.

Break an addictive pattern today. Or at least set the intention to do so. Remember the deal you struck with the Creator way back when.

In what relationships and behaviors are you creating Bread of Shame?

SHOCKED!‏

Reactive behavior creates intense sparks of Light but eventually leaves darkness in its wake.

Nestled within our reactive behavior is the desire for instant gratification. It offers a quick high that makes us feel alive and in control of our lives. We can become addicted to this feeling.

As we see in the case of a light bulb, when we resist reactive behavior, we generate Light. When we opt instead for instant gratification, we also create a very bright light. A direct connection occurs between our reactive desire (the negative pole) and the Light (the positive pole), producing a momentary flash of delight followed by darkness, because the bulb has burned itself out.

This is one of the unseen laws of the universe, not unlike gravity. If you jump out of a tall building, you will fall to the street below even if you are unaware of the existence of gravity. The same holds true of electricity. If you play with a live, high-voltage wire, you will get electrocuted even if you can't see the source of your demise.

Today, look into the areas of your life where you are sticking your finger in the socket. Ask yourself if the momentary jolts are worth all that pain.

The Real Source‏

Consider the light bulb in your ceiling. You flip a switch, and on it goes. But the light bulb is not the source of the light; the real source is an electric generator somewhere you can't even see. And there are rules around how much light can be emitted as well as when and why. The same is true with the Light of the Creator.

One of the common mistakes we all make is to confuse a person or thing with the Light. For instance, nothing feels as good as falling in love. So naturally we associate our girlfriend or boyfriend with those happy feelings and assume that person is the source of them. But it doesn't work that way. No other person can guarantee us the good feelings of love we are after. It's the way we act in relation to other people that brings the Light.

And that's what today is all about. Remembering that ultimately, your relationship to people and places is about your relationship to the Light of the Creator.

Google It‏

We each come to this world with a soul mission. However, most of us leave this world without ever having accomplished that mission.

We return back "upstairs" and realize we had our sights set on all the wrong things. If we are lucky, we get a chance to start over and come back again.

Why not get it right this time around? You don't want to go through the terrible two's again, do you? And puberty? I don't think so.

Why are you alive? What did your soul come here to do? These are worthy questions to ask of yourself today. Too bad we can't just Google what our life mission is. Maybe some day. But for now, the best way to find the answer is to ask the question. Ask enough times - and with intensity - and you will start seeing signs pointing you in the right direction.

Don't Take It Personally‏

How much pain and trouble is caused because we misinterpret what people say and do to us?

It's our ego-centric nature to think the worst and to take everything personally. It's not in our nature to think, I wonder what's going on for him right now? What pain inside caused him to do or say that?

When we take the actions of other people personally, this is our ego speaking, telling us that we are the center of the universe, that everything that happens in our lives revolves around us. Our ego is the veil separating us from the true, spiritual, 99% reality.

Today, know that the more you tame your ego-centric thinking, the more you don't take it personally, the more connected (ie. happier) you will be.

You Happen To You‏

How often have you heard or used the word suddenly? Suddenly she broke up with me; suddenly the coach kicked me off the team; suddenly my mom moved out.

But how sudden is sudden? For instance, have you ever woken up to suddenly find a new tree in your backyard? Or to find that your hair had suddenly grown ten inches? Or that you suddenly lived in a new home? Not likely.

"Sudden" implies a sense of chaos, a sense that things happen to us, rather than the deeper truth that we happen to ourselves.

Happening to ourselves is a good thing. No one else is calling the shots. And while this introduces a whole lot of responsibility for our thoughts, words, and actions, it also allows limitless possibilities.

We have already, perhaps unwittingly, shaped our past. And we have the power to shape our present and our future as well.

As you live today, keep this thought in mind: If something happens to me, I am locked in the physical. I am reacting. But if I am happening to me, good or bad, I am connecting with the spiritual. I am being proactive.

Don't expect to understand this completely now. This idea is a huge gold mine that will continue to yield riches as you explore it.

Butterfly's Wings‏

According to Kabbalah (and theoretical physics), we are all interdependent.

Think about that. It means your presence on this planet matters. Just like the gentle flapping of a butterfly's wings, your actions resonate beyond your wildest dreams.

This means acting responsibly and not selling yourself short. It also means remembering that your neighbor's actions are resonating as well, so don't sell them short, either.

Today, know you are special. Make an extra effort. Because when you don't feel how special you are, spiritually speaking, you make it harder for others to feel it.

Write Down Your Desires‏

hope I'm not the only one doing some writing. Journaling our thoughts, fears, desires, schemes, regrets, and fantasies is a powerful spiritual guide.

Are you up for a quick writing exercise today?

Make a list of your desires. Put down everything that comes to mind no matter how small or how foolish it may seem.

Just to get you started: I want to go skiing with my best friend this weekend, I want my sister to stop drugs, I want my children to stop fighting, I want to be a famous singer, I want to end world hunger, I want to save people's lives, I want to make so much money that my parents will never have to work again. You get the idea.

Just put that desire down on paper. When you've done that, write next to each desire how you think you might feel if you attained it. How might your life change?

Without knowing your true desires, you don't stand much of a chance of attaining them. So be honest!

God Is In Everything‏

End of the month. Money is tight. Charges on the credit card are increasing. Rent is due. Tuition for schools is due too. The news gets funkier every day. The month of Cancer in general can be tough on the emotions. On and on and on.

What do we do?

Pray! Pray for the ability to acknowledge that God is in everything.

We all have blessings in our lives even if we're having trouble finding a husband or making money or getting our lives on track or battling illness or depression. Even when life seems its darkest, there's always a pilot Light burning. Somewhere. You wouldn't be reading this if there wasn't Light pulsing through your being.

Look for that Light today. 'Count your blessings,' as they say.

What are you thankful for, right now, right this second?

Tough Love‏

don't do enough. I'm sitting here thinking about how many times I've avoided scanning Zohar or meditating on a 72 Name for a student who needs healing or going outside of myself to help others.

Really, I don't do enough.

And it hurts to be in this emotional place, when I see how I've let myself go in certain areas. But as long as it's pushing me forward to do more, then it's good.

This is something the 17th century kabbalist, the Baal Shem Tov, taught his students: if you are beating yourself up because you don't do enough, then it's just your ego talking. But if you are genuinely motivated by these thoughts, then it's your soul speaking.

Today, when you notice those places where you've gone soft or you don't feel that you are "doing enough", know it's a good thing. Instead of beating yourself up about it, think of it as some tough love from up above.

Identity Theft‏

Have you ever seen those warnings, "Identity Theft - Don't Be a Victim". It's actually quite kabbalistic.

We think we are who we are. Meaning, we think we are these notions we have of ourselves — black, white, man, woman, secure, insecure, lawyer, actor, son, brother, ADD, OCD, happy-go-lucky, whatever. But most of the time we are totally clueless of our real identity.

On a soul level, we transcend categories and mental constructs. We are souls, pure sparks of the Creator. And to tap that down into everyday language, we are love. We are compassion. We are giving. We are groundless. We are limitless. And of course, we are one. You, me, and everyone reading this, everyone walking around you in your office or on the street or wherever you are reading this, we‘re all connected.

Today, know that whoever you think you are, you are not him or her. Ask for guidance to be shown the real you. Reclaim your identity.

Technology, Not Morality‏

If you were to never buy a book on Kabbalah, or take a class online, or attend one of our live events or holidays, if you were only reading this one email and I had just this one chance to share with you a secret that would change your life, it would be this:

Like attracts like.

God, from a kabbalist's perspective, is not a bearded man on a mountain top or a judgmental omnipotent being, but it's a force of sharing and concern and love. When you quiet down your thoughts and step away from your feelings - and just radiate concern for others - you attain affinity with God.

And the moment you create this connection, you are tapping into this force. This is where fulfillment comes from.

That's why love thy neighbor was the revelation of a technology, not a moral ideal!

Today, be God. Be thoughtful of what others are going through. Be happy for others' happiness. Be kind to people for no good reason. Be the creative force you can be. Everything else will take care of itself.

Chubby Baby‏

Red String. If there's one thing everyone knows about The Kabbalah Centre, it's that we teach the importance of wearing it in order to protect ourselves from the evil eye. I'm certainly not going to be able to explain this seemingly archaic concept to readers in a mere paragraph. But for those of you who have been studying and wearing it, you know its powers.

I was reading this week in one of the ancient texts that ‘fish do not have evil eye because they are completely surrounded by water.

'Ok, a little weird. Who ever thinks of fish getting or giving evil eye. But the kabbalistic meaning of this concept is that water is chesed [mercy.] What I want to share with you about this is that when we immerse ourselves in the waters of a sharing consciousness, caring about others, the jealousy of people has no effect on us.

Be merciful today. Cut people some slack. Smile at people like you're smiling at chubby little babies.

Get Shocked‏

Restriction (the decision not to have immediate gratification) is something we have to recommit to every morning if we want to steer our lives in new and exciting direction.

We put ourselves through so much pain every time we dash after transient highs, whether it's a compliment or a purchase or an indulgment or literally a drug.

Many of us are aware of this, but we still can't stop. We can't help but stick our finger right in the socket. And we like it! But there's a price to pay. Hope this isn't sounding preachy, but let's be honest with ourselves.

Recommit to restriction today. It's the best path to revealing lasting Light. Yes, you will continue to shock yourself — that's what this game is all about. But just keep getting back on the horse. Every time you assert your conscious intent to restrict, you will be able to experience more real pleasure.

Enjoy Yourself‏

I've got an unusual request today.

Do something that's just for you. Enjoy yourself. We are going through a tough time (The Three Negative Weeks.) There's a lot of judgment flying around (our heads.) And it's ok to find little pleasures that make us happy. Sometimes indulging in a fatty snack or taking an extra ten minutes on our lunch hour or going to the beach instead of the gym is just what we need to put a smile back on our faces.

Do something for yourself today, guilt-free. If you're not happy, then none of us are happy.

Goin' Down to Go Up‏

Years ago in Queens, a student of my father was in a desperate financial situation. He hit rock bottom; creditors were lining up at his door and he could barely feed his family. He was frantic. My father, with his typical certainty and calm, told the man not to worry, "this is a good sign!"

When we hit rock bottom, though it's painful physically, it is also a breaking of klipot [shells of negativity] that create barriers between us and our true fulfillment. Of course, no one wants to be in this position - it hurts! But at the same time, we want to have the courage to accept it. The faster we admit that the pain has a purpose, the faster it will fill its purpose and subsequently go away.

Remember today that temporary pain prepares us to receive lasting fulfillment. Have the courage to fully experience your pain. You'll be surprised at the messages it can bring you.

You Shouldn't Read This‏

I just want to tell you today that there are a lot of things you should be doing. You should be volunteering more. You should be taking more classes. You should be scanning Zohar more. A lot more.

How does it feel when you read this? Am I inspiring you? Or am I making you want to throw your computer [and me] out the window?

Should is a terrible, terrible word. It creates resistance, not rejuvenation. It implies that we are not enough. And it's a word many of us use in our own inner dialogue. And that's exactly one of the reasons we don't do the things we should do.

Should is never the reason to connect to the Light.

Today, if you're feeling disconnected or a lack in your life, know that first of all, it's a good thing. Because it's an OPPORTUNITY to use the tools of Kabbalah: to scan more, to share more, to love more, to break a habit, to expand your vessel.

Intention is the key here. Do it because you know it works. And do it with enthusiasm! But please, don't do it because you should.

Gold Coins‏

Gold coins. Spiritually speaking, that's exactly what you receive every time you share. This isn't me talking, it's Rav Isaac Luria, the great 16th century kabbalist. He says if only we saw the richness of Light that's revealed every time we give of ourselves, we'd run around all day seeking sharing situations.

When was the last time you really shared? Today, when that little voice in your head whines, "what's in it for me?", answer back: GOLD! Share something - money, time, love — and know that every time you go against your nature and are genuine in your giving, you will receive the spiritual backing to manifest all of your dreams.

The Inner Point‏

We're always going to see what's wrong with people. That's easy. But it's not so easy to penetrate into the heart of what is good about a person.

The great 20th century kabbalist Rav Yehuda Brandwein taught his students to look for the inner point within a person; to see beyond the external and into the soul. He would often say, "Do not look at the container, but at what is in it."

Today, when you're in a meeting or at the checkout line or sitting at dinner with a friend or staring in the mirror, look for the good within the person facing you. See the beauty and Godliness within . Find the positive — it's there if you look hard enough.

Policemen of the Creator‏

Always remember the kabbalistic principle: there is no coercion in spirituality.

We cannot force our opinions upon others even though we may think it is for their benefit. We are not the policemen of the Creator. We can only share with an open heart and let the Light take care of the rest.

Is there someone that comes to mind as you read this today? Who are you coercing to believe, do, or say what you think is right?

Stand Up For What You Believe‏

My father's teacher, Rav Brandwein, taught him, "When we come to the upper worlds, we are asked to name the greatest accomplishment of our lives.

Most people answer, "Everybody loved me." These people are told to go back and do it all over again."

The purpose of our Creation is not to tow the line and do as we are told. It is to make waves and to be willing to stand alone if it means standing up for what we believe in.

Today, speak your truth, regardless of what others will think.

Limits of Human Perception‏

According to kabbalistic teachings, just as we are limited in our ability to see energy on a physical level, we are also limited in our ability to see the energy of fulfillment.

Everything we want could be inches away from our lives, yet we pass right over it.

The reason for this limitation is our five senses. Our five senses prevent us from perceiving total reality. We fail to see radio waves, atoms and TV signals that bounce off the walls of our home. Our five senses act as curtains that filter out most of true reality, leaving us with a very limited picture.

Even medical science tells us that humanity utilizes a mere 4% of our total brain capacity. Where is the remaining 96%?

And how are we to make decisions and judgments in life when we are permitted to glimpse only a microscopic portion of truth?

The great 20th century kabbalist, Rav Yehuda Ashlag, revealed a stunning secret when it comes to our five senses. He said that a human being usually perceives things in the opposite.

For example, consider a person living in total isolation since birth. He's never seen a living creature. Suddenly, placed before him is a newborn calf and a newborn baby. What does he perceive? Well, the baby obviously cannot take care of itself. It cannot walk or move around. It cannot feed itself. The infant cannot perceive his surroundings. If a fire erupted, the child would not sense any immediate danger. In essence, the newborn is helpless.

The calf, on the other hand, immediately perceives its environment. It knows to run from fire.

The person perceiving this situation would now have to assume that the calf is the superior, more advanced and far more intelligent creature.

Rav Ashlag tells us that as much as one creature is advanced and evolved at the beginning of its process of growth, it will be less developed at the end. And as much as another creature is less developed at the beginning of its process, it will develop that much more at the end.

Sure enough, over time, the baby advances far beyond the calf. Meanwhile, the calf hardly advances at all.

How many times have your five senses showed you the opposite in business deals and human relationships? What looked promising and full of potential at the beginning turned out to be disastrous in the end! And vice versa.

This simple analogy is worth pondering this week. Look for opposites and know that nothing is what it seems

Strength in Actions

A person whose strength is in his words, and not in his actions, will always be caught in the world of extremes." - the Zohar

There is tremendous energy in our vows. When we make promises and don't keep them, we create little voids of energy in our lives, which is why we are so often uncomfortable and dissastisifed.

Today, make sure what you put out there matches the truth of what you are doing. If there is any lack between the two, you are wasting your time, says the Zohar.

Black or White‏

Nothing is 100% black or white, right or wrong. good or bad.

When you look at reality and say, "I am right," you should always know that there is someone who will come along and say you are wrong. The problem of argument is not who is right or who is wrong — it is that you think that you are right and someone else is wrong!

Be open to another point of view today, even when you are 100% right.

Beauty of the Soul‏

The soul is speaking to the Creator: "Teach me the mysteries of the higher wisdom. How do you lead your flock in the upper world? Teach me so that I will not be shamed when I arrive among the eternal souls, for until now I have not reflected on these mysteries."

The Creator replies to the soul: 'If you don't understand the beauty of the soul, if you return and haven't reflected on the wisdom before you came here and don't know anything of the mysteries of the upper world, then you aren't merited to enter here. Therefore, return again. Study those things that people consider to be unimportant. Learn the secrets of the upper world.'" - The Zohar

Pick up a spiritual book today. Spend a few moments reflecting on why you are alive. Widen your focus. Put your attention on the "beauty of the soul" and what that means to you.

Express Your Fears‏

Fears comes from our darker side, the aspect of ourselves that seeks to sabotage our best intentions. But they are not real, which is why we say fear is False Evidence Appearing Real.

The kabbalistic method for breaking the stranglehold our fears have on us is to tell all our crazy thoughts and obsessions to our teacher or a trusted friend. This is a wonderful remedy.

Today, share all those doubts that spring up in your mind and heart. Do not omit anything because of shame. Through getting these things off your chest, you can break the power of the evil urge so that it will not be able to influence you as much the next time.

Prayer Delights‏

Some people don't ask for help from above because they don't think they know how. They feel foolish, inept.

The Maggid of Mezrich writes about this. He says that one who stumbles in prayer is "like a child who is very much loved by his parents. Even though he cannot speak well, his parents have great delight when he asks for something."

Today, feel certain in the fact that when you call out for help, you cries are being heard — and appreciated.

All That Matters‏

My father and teacher Rav Berg always taught me, "...there is only one thing that is important in this world: the Light. Nothing in this world is important in this world unless it, or they, are connected to the Light."

In the real reality, everything was created only so it could bring the Light of the Creator to the world. The truth is: to be truly important is to be connected to the Light.

Today, know that this connection comes from acts of transformation and sharing. A spark of the Light exists within all of us. We connect to and enflame it every time we place more importance on helping others than helping ourselves.

Mistakes Are Only Mistakes If...

Mistakes are opportunities. Every time we mess up — intentionally or not - there is a chance to learn and go to a new level. In fact, mistakes are only mistakes if we don't learn from them.

Today, forgive yourself for something you've done in the past. Remember, when you fall, you learn.

You Haven't Changed One Bit‏

Is there someone in your life you are really trying to help? You know exactly what they need to do, they may even be open to listening to you, and yet after countless hours of explaining and pleading with them, they're still not changing?
Or at least not as fast as you'd like them to?

How frustrating is that?

The Rav says the only way to help someone change is to "give them breathing space and listen to them."

We are not here to teach people the truth. We are here to turn enough Light bulbs on in their heads so they can see their own truth.

When the Rav says "listen to them", he is telling us to erase ourselves and to be one with people. We are all messengers for one another, and there is a reason why we see the solution to a person's problem. We have been chosen to be there. But it's not our solution. We are just an instrument for delivery.

People need to internalize things in their own time. Just because we "get it" doesn't mean they are going to get it. Giving people breathing space has been one of the secrets of my parents' success. That's why we say, "there is no coercion in spirituality." Everyone has their own process, and it's not up to us to impose our timetable on their change.

The best way to transmit our message is with patience, compassion, understanding, love and old-fashioned listening skills.

Most of us are weak active listeners. Usually when someone is talking, we are already planning our comeback. And how many times do we start our response with, "Yeah, but" - which only negates everything they just told us.

Without feeling where a person is at - and asking the Light to help us communicate from our heart (not our head) - we will only push them further down the hole.

This is a great lesson for all of us this week. We want to remember that we can't crack people open just by telling them the cold, hard truth. Instead, we want to feel what the person is going through, and ask the Creator to help us to be a pure channel through which our message can flow.

When we strive for this, the words won't matter. It's the heart that matters the most.

You Can Do It, I Can Do It‏

Kabbalists differentiate between two types of jealousy.

The first is the one we're all familiar with, whether we want to admit it or not. It's the pinch in our hearts when our friend gets what we want. That part of us that says, "why him, why not me?"

This is the worst type of jealousy we can ever have.

When we question why someone else is getting something instead of us, that's it, we're cooked. Why? Because when we question why our friend would receive something, we actually disconnect from our friend.

We create division. What happens the moment we create division with our friend? We create a separation between us and the Light. The Light, of course, being the best, most reliable, loving friend we could ever have.

Not only do we not have what we want, but we're also not happy with our friend; we've created a wall between us and them - and ultimately between us and the Light. This keeps us from getting what we want.

It's a vicious circle. Nothing good comes of it.

What shall be done?

Kabbalists explain there is a form of jealousy that is very positive. It's that voice that says, "Wow, I'm so happy for my friend, I'm glad he has that ! You know what, I want that too! I'd be glad to work for that!"

The first type of jealousy emanates purely from the realm of ego and separation. The second is motivational, and it empowers us to work with the law of cause and effect. It shows us the reason we want what our friend has is because they were sent into our life to make us want what they have - to show us that we can have it too!

Of course, we have to work for it, but when we're chasing down our dream, there can't be a consciousness of lack.

In fact most of us wear the Red String to protect us from evil eye, but do we know where evil eye comes from, and what its effects are? Evil eye is the very consciousness of lack. It's the automatic thought that fires off the second we envy someone, "why don't I have that? They don't deserve it - I do!"

Spiritually, it is equated to stealing energy from a person.

This week, find the things you are jealous of. Realize the reason you are seeing these things is to show you - you can have it too!

Next time you're jealous, go positive.

Attached At The Hip‏

The Zohar, the main text of Kabbalah explains that from the moment we come out of the womb, we have our partner - the Opponent - attached at the hip. And it's always there to challenge us.

Our mission is to search for and defeat this enemy within. But, at the same time, we have to keep in mind that fighting our dark side pushes us to greatness.

Today, get to your next level. Get out of your comfort zone. Really connect to the lasting fulfillment that you deserve.

Something for Nothing

We each come to this world to earn our fulfillment. That is why, when we receive something for nothing, we feel a certain degree of resentment or unworthiness. The Kabbalists call this feeling "bread of shame". This feeling arises because our soul is of the Light, and it's not in the Light's nature to be a non-sharing receiver.

Today, find out where you enable other people to feel this shame because you give them something for nothing. It could even be too much attention, or control over you, or plain old money. Figure it out and remember that by not allowing people to earn their fulfillment, you are keeping them from their true purpose.

You Are God‏

If you are truly connected to the Light, than you would know that your essence is part of God and you are untouchable.

Would you worry? Would you be depressed? Would you get sick?

As Rav Ashlag says, one of the most important things to know about ourselves is, we are holy within. When we are connected to our holiness, nothing can touch us.

Today, walk around knowing your holiness. See how it feels. If things go against you, remember you can handle it. Just like God. Which you are.

Bliss‏

"Where your thought is, is precisely where you are - all of yourself is there." - Baal Shem Tov

Where are you today?

There is not one moment greater than another. Do you get what that means?

If you did, you'd have no worries at all. That's what being connected to the Light is all about.

Today, when you are obsessing about what you'll do the next hour for lunch, for dinner, for life - set your obsessions aside and just enjoy the moment. Put all your thoughts into right now. Right now is bliss. Right now.

You Are Not Spiritual‏

I often hear students talking about people in their lives as "not spiritual." I have to say, I never really understand what this means. I guess it's because my mother always teaches me, "if they've got a spirit, they're spiritual." She sees everyone as a spark of the Creator.

Sure, I don't look like you and you don't look like me. That's because we are each created in the image of God differently. And for a very good reason — we all have our unique challenges to tackle in this world. Who am I to judge you as "not spiritual?"

Instead of judging people for being different than you, encourage and love them for who they are and what they do. Support them in their life process, whatever that may be.

Today, respect that everyone in your life is on their own journey. If the Light saw fit to create them and breathe life into their lungs, who are you to heap them into the unredeemable category of "not spiritual?"

You Can Do It‏

Rav Akiva, the teacher of Rav Shimon (author of the holy Zohar), was forty years old when he began to study the secrets of Kabbalah. He did not think he could do it after having lived such a different way of life all those years.

One day he passed a stream and noticed a hole inside a rock caused by years of tiny drops of water. Rachel, his wife, encouraged him, "If it takes the rock many years to form a hole, it is a sign that it must take all of us time to change and let the Light in," she explained.

Imagine if he hadn't learned this lesson. Imagine the world without the teachings of Rav Shimon. Imagine the world without the Light of the Zohar. There'd be nothing to imagine as this world would cease to exist.

Four words for you today: YOU CAN DO IT!

An Uncertain World‏

How do we survive in an uncertain world?"

We face all kinds of difficulties in health, finances, friends, partnerships - life. When it looks the darkest, when it looks like the end of the road and you are all by yourself, when you wonder what will happen next, open the door to certainty, and you will find a place that is better than it was before. Light is there to balance the negativity.

Have certainty in the Light. If a situation seems really really hard, it means there is great Light to come from it. The only way to get a sparkling white diamond is to put black coal under a lot of pressure." - Karen Berg

Where's your certainty today?

Sin of Guilt‏

When a person makes a mistake in judgment - hurts, cheats, lies, steals, etc - the negative action takes but a few seconds or minutes. The guilt however, the self-deprication and bad memories can last a lifetime. And while it's vital to the correction process to feel pain about our misdeeds, it is just as vital that we move on. Otherwise it's like days, weeks, months or years of disconnection from our source.

Today, think about a past event that you're still berating yourself over. Imagine your life not without that event, but without the memory of that event. How would it change your story?

Open the Door‏

In the Power of Kabbalah, I wrote, don't believe the senses. We are deceived by illusionary logic. We don't see energy, we don't see when disease starts, we don't see when the miracles come.

Remember this today. I don't expect you to change your perception overnight, but I do ask you to get out of your head for one second and look for the reality you don't see. Open the door to understanding those things in life that don't make sense.

I Challenge You

The Light never lies to us. It tells it to us straight: what you want is going to require hard work, but the fulfillment is yours to keep.

This is why, when faced with a difficult situation, we always want to go for it and really deal with the pain and discomfort. We want to pull our sleeves up and stick our hands in the mud. This is what will feed our soul and in the end actually teach us quite a lot about our potential.

Today, remember that you cannot discover your potential if you only take the easy route. It's like kids who learn very easily, but never want to work. How can they ever really discover how talented they are - and how far they can reach - if they're not challenged?

Running Away‏

Human nature is to run away from pain and run towards joy and pleasure. There's no free will and no exceptions to this rule.

This is not my idea. It's Rav Ashlag's. I remind you of it today because to be aware is to exercise free will. And to exercise free will is to be the exception to the rule.

Today, when someone hurts you - slight or big - and you want to run away from the pain — open your heart instead. Submit to the discomfort of embarrassment, heartache, loss, disappointment, sadness. Give in to what you are fighting. There is great strength in profound vulnerability.

Snowflakes in Hell‏

There is a spiritual law that dictates whoever cares about others is cared about by the Creator. And if we know that we are nothing without the care of the Light, then it is impossible not to care about others.

If we spend our entire lives dealing with ourselves alone, then we won't have even the slightest chance of making it, not unlike a snowflake in Hell.

Today, assess how much time you spend helping yourself alone versus time spent genuinely reaching out and helping others.

Squeezing‏

What is a problem, really? A problem is only a "problem" because we think it is. It's all how we look at it. We can also appreciate that challenges are from the Light. Without them, maybe we wouldn't have become spiritual. We want to always be thankful for difficulties because of where they bring us. For most people, they bring us to a place of squeezing — the extra mile.

While we rarely see it in the moment, the pain is always a blessing, allowing us to reveal Light for ourselves and others.

Today, accept your garbage, embrace it, and know that looking at the uglier parts of your life is where you'll find the biggest blessings.

Wave of Crave

You may have noticed that the Tune Up is late. Since Sunday, our Customer Care department has been swamped with people asking if there was a problem with their email settings. No, your email works fine. I delayed the Tune Up for a few days to explain the following lesson.

There is a basic rule of spirituality: If you don't crave, you don't get. Light only comes to a place where there is a strong desire, a place where there is craving.

Any spiritual teacher worth his salt will do everything in his power to develop yearning within his students. Part of giving is allowing people to build their desire.

We can learn from the experience Rav Ashlag, (founder of The Kabbalah Centre in 1922) had with his own teacher. His teacher was a successful merchant in Jerusalem, but no one knew he was a Kabbalist. He revealed himself to Rav Ashlag and taught him for three months. Rav Ashlag had sought this experience his entire life and he was so energized and excited.

However, gradually his teacher came less and less, until finally he disappeared altogether. It took Rav Ashlag three months to realize it was his ego that had caused his teacher to disappear. He prayed and prayed and prayed to see his teacher again. Then, one day his teacher revealed himself again to Rav Ashlag - for one day. The next day he passed away.

In our spiritual growth, if we don't have a strong passion, we lose the connection. Craving is a gift. It comes as part of the process. We need to push ourselves, constantly making an effort. We need to give and empty ourselves until the next wave of craving comes. When you have a huge craving for the Light, you are with the Light.

How much of the day are you craving? How much of the day do you want more?

This week, find where your desire is small and expand it.

Off the Hook

Kabbalists have no guilt.

Why? Because they understand when we continually beat ourselves up for a mistake we made, we're just feeding our Opponent. In order to move on in our lives, we have to forgive ourselves.

OK, we said something stupid, we hurt someone's feelings, we disappointed a friend. What good does it do to keep reliving it? The best thing to do is to laugh about it, and think about how you can do it different next time.

By letting go of self-hate and injecting humor, our ego get ripped to shreds and we remove the judgment from the action.

Let yourself off the hook today.

"Umph!"

Most of us have an appreciation for what we don't have, but we don't appreciate what we already have. But you know this already. The brand new car this week loses its umph 10 weeks from now.

The big question is, how do we maintain our gratefulness?

Remembering.

Whatever you have right now is yours because at some point you desired it. The trick is to constantly remind yourself of why you wanted it in first place. Go back to those feelings today. That's what being grateful is about.

"Don't Box Me In"‏

Don't categorize people.

Three people could tell me the same thing, but I will take one more seriously than the others just because of the way they look. I catch myself doing this all the time. It's an unconscious response. Some would say it's human nature. But as a student and teacher of spirituality, I'm all about overcoming my human nature, and tapping into my higher nature.

"Respect everyone without focusing on, and being influenced by, their external appearance." - The Rav

"I Hate You"

I hate you.

How many times during the day does that thought pop into your mind? How many times does it spill out of your mouth? How many?

If I tell you it's not nice to hate, will you stop? I don't think so. If I tell you hatred brings chaos into your life, now will you change?

"Turmoil is a sign of hatred" - Rav Nachman of Breslov

Every time you are hating someone [even for no reason, which is the case most of the time] you are inviting a little more chaos into your life.

With that in mind, I've only one guiding questions for you today. Where's the love?

Brilliant Light‏

The more challenging the obstacle that you face in life, the more spiritually evolved you will become if you prevail over it. Because it is about effort, not achievement. As the ancient Kabbalists put it:

"There is no light as brilliant as that light which manages to emerge from out of the darkness." - The Zohar

Today, give your best and know that as dark as things may seem, there is great Light waiting to be revealed.

The More, The Merrier!

The more barriers that exist, the more chances we have to plug into the Light. The more obstacles there are, the greater the number of triggers to ignite our reactions, so that we can resist and transform them. The more, the merrier!

After all, transforming is the purpose of our lives, and only an obstacle can give us that opportunity.

Today, welcome any obstacle you encounter. Use it to practice transformation and to resist your emotional reactions.

You Think Too Much‏

Don't think. Just do.

It is said that prophesy comes from kids and fools. Why? Because they channel pure, raw information that comes from beyond the brain.

Think about a time of imminent danger such as a near car accident when you made that instinctual right or left which saved you from disaster. Did you have to think about it? No. You just acted. The Light guided you.

It's the thinking and analyzing that stops us from living.

Today, don't think. Act on your gut instincts. If you really believe that you are connected to and guided by the Light, than just let that flow right through you.

Opening the Curtain‏

In order to find the Light, you must first find the darkness.

If are in a room whose windows are curtained off, do you look for a lamp? No, you find the curtain! The Light is always there. It never leaves. When we take down the curtains (low self-esteem, self-hatred, egotism, elitism, judgment, deafening doubt - and all our old enemies) we let the love and happiness pour in.

Today, remember the Light never left. It's only covered up. Find — and tear down - the curtains within. Let a little Light in.

Striving For Perfection‏

Kabbalah isn't about attaining perfection — it's about striving for perfection. We are not going to attain perfection and then the world will change. The world will change when enough people strive for perfection.

Listen, we all react. We aren't angels. But if we are just aware and striving not to react, the act of striving and being somewhat successful at it - more times than not - is helping to raise the immortality rate for the entire world.

Today, put extra effort into proacting. When you see someone coming who you don't like, run towards them with love and acceptance. Do the opposite of what you normally do.

Activate the Creator Within‏

When my father and teacher Rav Berg makes a blessing over wine, he takes a long pause and meditates on the words, activate the Creator within.

How do we do that on a practical level? We have to be one with the Creator and we do this by being one with other people. You see, the Light of the Creator is a force of unconditional love. Every time we act from a place of genuine caring and concern, we activate that force inside."

The experience of cleaving to the supernal Light cannot be attained but because of a spiritual faculty, namely of desire and love." -Kabbalist Abraham Azulai

Today, make the decision to love everyone unconditionally. Look at their best parts and focus only on that. Truly love them and also pay attention to the results in your day

Feeling Uncomfortable‏

Here is a very simple nugget of wisdom from Kabbalah: wherever we're seeking temporary fulfillment in our life now, we may have lasting chaos. Wherever we are willing to put up with temporary discomfort now, we have a good chance of having lasting fulfillment.

Today, if you're already feeling uncomfortable in some area of your life, then know it's a good sign. You're on the pathway toward fulfillment.

Change It Up‏

Anything can change. All you need to do is tap into the 99 percent realm (the spiritual world.)

We can go from having no money to creating abundance; we can choose to have quality relationships where we were once isolated and lonely. We can have physical health instead of the illness and disease that plagued our body before. Our job is to connect to that potential through consciousness, changing our nature, and then bringing the miracles into manifestation.

Think about some particular aspect of your life where you really need clarity. Commit your question to writing. Your mission is to get clarity on this issue from the 99 Percent realm, uncorrupted by intellect, opinion, and memories.

Listen for the answer. Look for signs. Because you will be guided. Remember, a light doesn't go on in a darkened room, unless there is a desire in the person to turn it on by flipping the light switch. In the same way, when we ask for clarity from the 99 percent, the law of cause and effect tells us we will always get our answer. We just need to actively listen.

The Chicken Chooses‏

There is a story of two men who came to their spiritual teacher to solve a dispute over a chicken. Each claimed the bird belonged to him. The teacher let it go between the two men's property to see which way it would go. Whichever the chicken chose would be the rightful owner.

We too are caught in the fight between the Light and the dark within. The technologies of Kabbalah help us get free of the hold of the lower part of our nature and then it's up to each one of us to run to our owner, the Light.

Today, run to the Light by rejecting anger, hate and indifference while embracing love, understanding and passion. If we each can do this - and help others to do the same - then we will be able to make a tangible difference in this world.

Reveal Yourself‏

Recently, I was reading a survey saying most Americans believe in God. But the real question is, do they believe in themselves. Do you?

Kabbalah teaches we are each sparks of the Creator's Light, in possession of unlimited Godlike powers of healing, love and creativity. But most of us don't realize it. Instead, we walk around with our heads down, hiding from what is true and omnipotent inside.

Whether it's telling our spouses our true feelings, or asking our boss for that well-deserved raise, or approaching a new person at a party, or staying in bed until the last possible minute, we do not embrace our Godly powers. We are all hiding from something.

What are you hiding from?

Today, get out from under that rock. Say what you want to say, without guilt. Feel what you want to feel, without guilt. Do what you want to do, without guilt. Own your power. Reveal yourself. That's believing in God.

Only Good Things Happen‏

Recently I met a man who lives out on a ranch and is not versed in Kabbalah or spirituality. He lives off the land and hasn't any interest in spirituality and God and all that. But he's been through his fair share of tests, ordeals that would have sent most of us scrambling into the hills. I asked him how he does it, how he keeps fighting insurmountable battles — and winning.

He told me it's simple. When bad things happen, you make it good. And when you do that long enough, you reach a state where you realize, only good things happen.

Today, forget about looking for the silver lining, and searching for why this is happening, and fakin' it till you make it. Put all that on hold for today. Instead, jump right into that awareness - only good things happen.

I'm Rich!‏

We spend our lives running after what other people have. We want to be rich like the celebrities we see in the magazines, have the fancy lake house our brother has, live the life of leisure that our rich uncle leads. But there is truth to the old cliche, 'you are rich in spirit.'

As my mother writes,

"What is a rich person? The word ashir, "rich" in Aramaic is an acronym for the words "eyes, teeth, hands, feet." That's a rich person! Someone who has eyes to see, teeth to eat and speak, hands to create, and feet to walk. This, of course, does not refer only to the physical, but to our ability to be able to connect with, to share, to create, and to do."

Today, walk around like the gazillionaire you are. Look in the mirror and say YES, I'M RICH! Enjoy your wealth - and be generous with it.

Turning the Heat Back On‏

When you start something new, it's only natural to feel excitement and passion. But like all of us, you start to doubt yourself.

"Remember what Amalek did to you, how he cooled you off on the way." - The Bible

Kabbalistically, Amalek is a code word for doubt. It's those thoughts of, "this will never work, I'm not smart enough, why am I wasting my time," or whatever destructive dialogue runs through your mind.

Today, find those areas in your life where your excitement has cooled down. Remind yourself, it's not you talking, it's Amalek. The passion was real, and still is. Fight the doubt, and return to your original intentions.

That's how you turn the heat back on.

Pleasure is Reality‏

Humanity is addicted to pleasure - and that's not a bad thing. Kabbalistically, pleasure is the only true reality. Love and goodness and joy — these are the attributes of the Light. The rest is illusionary.

Problem is, before coming down to the physical reality, our souls struck a deal with the Creator: let me earn my pleasure. So the Creator sends us painful situations and people that allow us to work for it. But most of us can't stand the pain so we run towards pleasure, the temporary kind.

Today, when you are on line for Starbucks waiting for your non-fat latte with extra foam, or sneaking a cigarette or surfing the internet while work awaits, check in with yourself. Why are you doing this action? Is there some uncomfortability you are avoiding?

Don't get off line, or stub out your cigarette. I'm not intending for this message to guilt trip you. Just pay attention to what you are doing. And learn from it. Always learn from it.

See the Seed‏

Every event in our world has a seed. If life appears chaotic, random and disordered, it's only because we cannot perceive the process of cause and effect at work. In other words, we see the tree, but not the seed.

This lack of perspective leads people to live under the illusion that things happen suddenly. They don't. They can't. Nothing occurs suddenly. An oak tree never just appears on our front lawn. A seed is always planted first.

If there is something in your life right now that you want to get rid of, you must first accept the principle that you, yes, you, planted the seed somewhere in your past. No matter how random the event appears to be there are no accidents in Kabbalah. There is only order; cause and effect; action and reaction.

Today, plant a positive seed by becoming accountable and taking responsibility for one thoughtless, selfish action you committed in the past.

Soul Driver‏

The number one statement we need to understand this week is, we are not our bodies - we are only our soul.

What's the body here for, you ask? It's the car on the road trip of life. It's the vehicle that allows us to do good actions in the world and to be a conduit for revealing positive energy.

The body is a temporary means to an end. I think all of us have had those middle-of-the-night epiphanies, where we realize the depth of this statement. But it's hard to keep in our minds, and we all fall into caring what people think about us — good or bad — and we obsess over our reflection in the mirror.

The Baal Shem Tov, a Kabbalist who lived and taught in the 18th century, reminded his students to always feel they are only soul. Yes, the body is a temple, and it's important to care for and respect it. But again, we have to reclaim our territory and care of our soul.

How? Well, for starters, the soul needs to be fed. What does our soul eat? Energy, of course. The energy feeding our soul comes from the good actions we do on a daily basis. The number one way to have a soul that is harmonious, open and well-fed is to systematically look for people that need help and do what we can to meet their needs.

Another tip for caring for our soul comes first thing in the morning. The Kabbalists recommend waking up each day roaring like a lion. The seed for our entire day begins in the morning. In fact, if we find we've been upside down and in a bad mood all day, it's likely it began in the morning.

But if we change our consciousness, knowing something great is going to happen, excited about the unexpected magic, intending that this day will be the best day ever, we'll be shocked to see how many incredible things will happen to us. When we wake up energized and ready to go for it, we will be in tune with our soul.

This week, practice waking up each day like a lion. Really put your soul forward from the beginning of the day. And notice the ongoing, non-stop demands of your body. Redirect these desires by looking for ways to share love, time and effort with people. You never know when the Light is going to put someone in your path whose day — or life - you can save.

Pay attention to the yearnings of your soul. It's the only way to win this race.

More Than Meets The Eye‏

There is more to life than what you see. Kabbalists explain there are two worlds co-existing simultaneously in parallel dimensions: the physical world of our five senses, and the spiritual world which is the remaining 99% of our reality.

Our goal in life is to find a way to bring these two dimensions together.

Today, let go of the limitations of your five senses in the 1% world and start to connect more with the unlimited 99% world. You have the ability, just trust your intuition. Look for signs during the day. Pay particular attention to synchronicities, coincidences, intuition, creative inspiration, and miracles.

All you need is desire and awareness in order to connect with the 99%.

Follow the Signs‏

When the Israelites were wandering in the desert post-Egypt, it is written that they followed the cloud of honor; literally a cloud that showed them where to go, when to go, and when to stop. Nice. Too bad we don't have a cloud showing us the way to go in our lives.

Well, we do. Not a cloud per se, but more like messages, signs. Have you ever had one of those "message" moments, something a friend said, a passage you randomly opened up to in a book, a piece of paper that just couldn't stay in the trash?

We have to realize we receive divine guidance on a constant basis; we only need learn how to listen.

I read somewhere we only hear 8% of what is said to us. 8%! What do we do with the other 92%? In order to grow spiritually, and to receive the guidance as to the best moves to make, we want to commit to listening to everyone, no matter how boring, no matter how much we disagree. You never know when the cosmos is trying to get a message through to you.

It can be a very tough pill to swallow, this idea that we have to listen to everyone around us - even if they drive us completely mad. It doesn't mean we have to do everything everyone tells us; just stay open. For example, we may be sitting through an hour long lecture from someone we can't stand. But what if that one hour had hidden in it the answer to the question we've always wanted answered?

Our job is to find the truth and discard the rest. There's no denying it may be uncomfortable but it will only last a moment. Besides, when we chase comfort, we're guaranteed ongoing pain and suffering.

This week is an incredible week to receive messages. The more we learn to be open to the constant flow of messages the Light sends our way, the more we can elevate beyond the fragmented world we live in day to day. We all have the capability to be huge channels. After all, the word Kabbalah itself means to receive. We are here to be better receivers in every sense. When we learn to follow the directions we're provided, we'll be well on the way.

Take a Shower‏

For many of us, when we start connecting to Kabbalah, we start disconnecting from certain people, situations, and behaviors that weren't healthy for us. For whatever reason, we didn't see how toxic these relationships or activities were. It's a gift to be able to see like this, but it's also painful. And it's part of the spiritual process.

As my mother and teacher Karen Berg puts it, "it's like taking a shower and putting on clean clothing: If a person is trying to get close to God, he has to allow himself to be cleansed before he can put on new spiritual clothing."

The next time you experience a challenge like this, stop for a moment and remind yourself that God is only trying to encourage you to take a shower!

Slave of the Soul‏

Most of us think we are physical beings seeking a spiritual experience whereas in truth, it's the other way around. The soul puts on this body suit merely for the purpose of achieving a correction it couldn't achieve in the upper worlds.

That beautiful, fat, deformed, hourglass, scarred, smooth, sexy, ugly body you see in the mirror — we all see something different — is merely a means to an end.

"In most people, the soul feeds the body and keeps it alive, but in the righteous person it is the other way around: The body becomes the slave of the soul; the body cancels its consciousness and is busy serving the soul." — Rav Berg

Today, live from your soul. As you go through your day, think how your actions can benefit at least one or two people. Put your soul in the driver's seat and let your body come along for the ride. Do that and you will have magic in your day.

Consistent Sharing‏

Are you consistent with everyone? Do you share with the same passion with the people you dislike as those you love?

If you want to stay connected to the Tree of Life, then you must be concerned with the energy of sharing, period. As my father and teacher Rav Berg teaches me,

"a candle lights its surroundings in the same way regardless of whether it is surrounded by light or by darkness. We must behave in the same manner, spreading Light regardless of the behavior of those around us."

An exercise for today is to look for people you have no desire to share with; someone you are angry with or don't like or don't respect or you name it. Go against the urge to walk away from them, and instead some to really give them something that they need in the moment, be it understanding, a smile, an apology, and so on. But don't just go through the motions — really feel it inside. That's the only what it will be real, and that's when you're channeling the energy of the Light.

Tippin' the Scales‏

Did you see Evan Almighty? Cute movie. The basic message was we can change the world with small acts of random kindness. I couldn't think of a more kabbalistic message.

Rav Ashlag, founder of The Kabbalah Centre in 1922, gave a simple analogy to explain this. Place on one side of a balance scale sesame seeds that represent chaos, darkness, pain and suffering, and on the other side place sesame seeds that represent unlimited fulfillment, joy, happiness, and the removal of all pain and suffering.

Rav Ashlag then asked the question: How many seeds would it take to tip the scale one way or the other? The answer is one. And that's how we change the world. That seed could be one action of caring — one person deciding to make a difference.

Too often we believe who we are isn't enough, our gestures of kindness and love won't make a difference, our ability to restrict our ego won't mean a thing in the grand scale of things. Yet, according to the kabbalists, just one action can mean the difference between darkness and Light.

Today, think about what that one sesame seed would be for you. What could tip the scales in your own life from garbage to gift, from darkness to Light, from selfishness to unconditional giving?

Break the Pattern‏

In times of pressure and stress, we usually see what someone is made of, right? That's when we see someone's real temperament.

Now imagine being totally stressed out. Visualize yourself being pressured by an outside source; you've got a deadline coming up or your boyfriend is telling you everything that you do wrong. Watch the dialogue in your head. Are you listening to the voice of the Light ["this is happening for a positive reason"]...or are you listening to the voice of the Opponent ["life sucks"]?

If your buttons are being triggered and you are coming from a place of hopelessness, you're listening to the Opponent.

Today is your chance to break the pattern. What could you do differently when responding to this trigger?

Harsh Times‏

Not a day or week goes by when I don't get criticized. And unlike most of us, my criticisms are aired out in front of millions of people.

What can I say, I asked for it. The Zohar says we attract the people and situations that will help us grow the most. I'm not saying it feels good, but on the whole, I know no matter how cruel and cutting the comments are, this person wouldn't be saying this if there wasn't something for me to learn.

If I didn't live this principle, I would have shut down a long time ago. In fact, if my parents didn't live this principle, I wouldn't even be here to share and learn with you. In fact, if Rav Brandwein didn't live this principle, my parents wouldn't even be together to share and learn with you. In fact, you get the point.

Stay open for business today. Don't close your doors when the critics come knocking. Just the opposite, let them in, hear them out, and learn from them. In your heart, thank them, because we learn the most from our harshest critics.

Smiling Saves Lives‏

A famous kabbalist wrote, "through joy you can give renewed life to another person who is in a state of depression (or another fallen state.) By approaching them with a happy face you are able to give them renewed life."

Smile. You never whose life you can save

Out On Loan‏

Have you ever borrowed a friend's car? I'm sure you were super careful not to damage it, parking it with enough room so you wouldn't get any nicks or dings, filling it up with gas, making sure not to spill anything on the seat.

Imagine if you went through your day with the realization that you were borrowed material. It shouldn't be too hard to imagine since, spiritually speaking, that's exactly what you are - out on loan.

"happy is the man who returns the deposit [namely, the soul] to the Creator as it was given him, that is, undamaged." - The Zohar

Appreciate the great gift that is in your care today (the gift is you.) Treat it well. Love it. And put it to best use by sharing it with others.

Don't Want to See‏

Remember, the Zohar constantly reminds us the thing we need most to change, we see the least. If someone approaches you and says you should change XYZ, then chances are you will not see it; you will always find a reason to justify your actions because you don't want to see it.

Furthermore, Rav Shimon explains if you are busy patting yourself on your back for the great spiritual work you've done, it is a sure sign you haven't. When one is truly on a spiritual path, one will always see how much more work needs to be done.

Today, look at those areas where you are satisfied, where you think you have changed. Have you? What more can you do? And continue to remain open to the pure, honest feedback of strangers and others who have no vested interest in whether or not you change.

Drop the Defensiveness‏

Messages are now flying at us left and right. If we can only learn to drop the defensiveness, then we can make some real personal progress by letting in some great, accurate feedback on what we need to change.

The kabbalists teach that the best feedback comes from strangers, who have no emotional ties to us and therefore can clearly see what our issues are. Don't you find this to be true? I know in my own life it's usually easy to spot someone's garbage right away. It's the people I know best I sometimes know the least.

Keep your heart open today. Accept honest feedback from every direction. The potential for change is huge.

Up to the Task‏

Pessimists are usually right, optimists are usually wrong, but most great changes were made by optimists. I read that somewhere and it resonates within me and a lot of us here at The Kabbalah Centre, where our mission is nothing less than the removal of death from the lexicon of the universal vocabulary.

Not an easy task, not even a logical task, but it's a task to which myself and thousands around the world have dedicated their lives. And we're doing it with the technology of Kabbalah [or as my father and teacher Rav Berg calls it, 25th century science,] and the technology of converting the ego's desires into the soul's desires.

As I wrote on Tuesday, it's through small personal changes that our goal will be accomplished. Keep looking for ways in which you can change robotic behavior into proactive behavior, blind hatred into unconditional love, and intolerance into compassion. Let's prove those pessimists wrong, once and for all.

Shrinking Light‏

The Ari teaches we decrease the Light flowing into our life when we hold onto grudges. Peek beneath the surface of your life and you'll likely find old ones that have not completely healed. It doesn't matter whether they're from far back or in the more recent past, these resentments are blocking your fulfillment, literally.

This is the week to root them out.

According to kabbalistic teaching, we are separated from God by a sequence of ten energy fields known as the sefirot (singular, sefirah). Together, arranged in right, left, and central columns, the ten make up what kabbalists call "the Tree of Life." As we increase our spiritual competency by ascending each sefirah, we simultaneously increase our spiritual capacity, giving us the ability to connect with and contain more and more Light. In other words, we are able to draw ever nearer to the Creator.

The Ari reveals when we hold grudges, the sefirot shrink, thereby narrowing our gateway to the Light. We begin to experience a shortage of Light, and we look for substitutes. In fact, the Kabbalists explain this as the source of all forms of addiction. It's our way of trying to get Light, but instead of getting the real thing, we get the sweet ‘n' low version. We get a boost of Light that doesn't help grow our desire for more Light; it actually shrinks our desire.

Look at people who are full of grudges, it's like they live in a perpetual black hole. They have no energy. I am sure you have had your periods in life when you were bitter [hopefully they were short.] It's like life loses its luster and charm, and we become filled with, well, nothing. That is why during such times we are so needy. Our real need in life, the Light, isn't being met and we're on a quest to fill the void.

Kabbalah is teaching us to constantly expand our desire. The last thing we want to do is to shrink our vessel by allowing grudges and resentment to block us from attaining the amazing life we can have.

Why would we ever want to hold onto what is so bitter, when we could have what is so sweet?

Spend a couple of minutes every night this week reviewing your day. Look for those grudges you are still carrying around and ask the Light why they are in your movie. Forgive the people you need to forgive and send Light and ask to be forgiven by those whom you have hurt during the day.

By always connecting to the system of mercy, instead of judgment, you can ensure a steady connection to a huge amount of Light.

Guilt and Fear are Gone‏

Most of us are stuck in the mud worrying about what tomorrow is going to be or beating ourselves with guilt over what yesterday was. Imagine what a heaven on earth this would be if there were no more fear or guilt!

No, seriously, imagine how much more peaceful and productive your life would be if fragments of fear and guilt no longer ran rampant throughout your consciousness. Without all that chatter stopping up the flow of your life, what would you do different today?

Stop Fighting‏

Molasses — these days I'm covered in it. At least that's what it feels like trudging through the Omer, people yelling at me left and right. You can really feel the negativity weighing down on people.

That's why I'm taking it easy. Avoiding conflict, even within myself. Just lots of deep breaths and a commitment to stop fighting every thought and letting the Light do some of the heavy lifting. When I stop fighting the universe, the universe stops fighting me.

Let go today. OK, so that lady totally cut you off and took the last banana walnut bran muffin, the one you had your eyes on. Let her have it. OK, so you're going crazy trying to find a job and there's nothing out there. Keep plugging away and something will open up. OK, your husband is pushing buttons you didn't even know existed. Give him some space. Take a night out with the girls. Let go.This is only a test.

Let go and you'll pass with flying colors.

We Are One‏

Kabbalah connects us with old truths; it brings to our consciousness thoughts we already know in our subconscious minds.

The greatest truth it brings to mind is this: we are one. Sure, we are each offshoots of our unique family trees, but if you go back far enough, we all come from the same root - the body of Adam.

Today, understand this truth with your mind, connect to it with your heart, and act on it with all your being. See the people you come in contact with as an integral part of yourself — and treat them that way.

Change the World‏

For those of us who want to change the world, it's essential to remember when we make small changes in ourselves, we reveal the spark of God within. This is what creates change in the world.

Small changes are by no means easy, as you know. Over time, we create negative response habits that we unconsciously follow. Stopping these habits is like holding back a tidal wave. But, it's not totally impossible. We can do it. It just takes a lot of our effort. Scratch that, it takes ALL our effort, but we can do it. And when we do overcome ourselves, we allow the Light of our souls to illuminate the people in our immediate circle and beyond.

Bottom line: Today, when you face a challenge, refuse to react in your usual way. Choose a new direction of proactivity. This is not only how you will change your life, but it's how you will change the world. You can do it.

Thank You‏

We all have something in our life we know is important, but yet we don't appreciated enough. You've heard this before, and you'll hear it again: we lose what we don't appreciate.

Today is the perfect day to sit quiet for a moment and to thank the Creator for allowing you the privilege of ___________.

Pray to Change‏

Kabbalah teaches if we leave the church, temple, mosque or shrine the same person we were before entering, it's as if we did not enter at all. The same goes with learning from the Zohar and other kabbalistic sources.

Prayer, meditation and study are a means to an end — to open ourselves up for the Light to enter in order to help us change. God does not need our thank you's or supplications. Personal growth is all that matters.

Are you different today than you were yesterday? Take some time to work on changing one part of your personality that you dislike. When you make those small changes in yourself, you reveal the spark of God within. And that's the best form of prayer you can offer.

Peek-a-boo, I See You!‏

"…when we mask ourselves from the world,we mask ourselves from ourselves, separating from the Light inside, our true essence. There can be no fulfillment living this way."- Karen Berg, Simple Light
How many people in your life are you totally honest with? How many people in your life are totally honest with you? Is there one person in your life with whom there are no blockages, no veils?
Honesty truly is such a lonely word. We are terrified to say what's on our mind, either out of fear of what "they" will think, or not wanting to burden people with our terrible truths.
One of the hardest things in Kabbalah - one of the hardest things in life — is to live in an emotional environment of truth. But we need it, especially now, during the Omer when there are other forces trying to bring us down. We can better bear this heaviness if we have people to support us.
But the only way others can help is if we start with truthfulness, all the time. Mind games, insecurity, closing off — these things hold us back in our relationships, our friendships, our life in general. If our path is to be successful, then it must be shared. This means making our pain and embarrassment visible to at least one trusted friend or teacher.
And please know there are people waiting for you to open up (and they are waiting to open up to you.)
The goal for the week is to find one or two people with whom you can share whatever it is that you are, at your core. Air out all the dark thoughts and worries; open up all the secret chambers of your heart. Be willing to look like a total fool, weakling, loser — or whatever it is you are afraid "they" will call you.
Connect with people in a real way and you'll connect to the real you — fulfilled, peaceful and purposeful

All Your Might‏

We might think we cannot do certain things because they are too hard, take too much time, or cost too much money. But all we have to do is start. The Zohar says, in the portion of Vayera, "open to me an opening no wider than the eye of a needle and I will open to you the supernal gates." Even though the needle is small, it is complete. So too, any kind of growth can be small in the beginning, but as long as it is done with 100% effort, amazing things can follow.

What activity, hobby, career-change, relationship or spiritual commitment have you been putting off? Today, take a positive action step. All you have to do is to try with all your might. The Light will help you with the rest.

Loud & Clear‏

Have you heard about the man who begged God for years to allow him to win the lottery? Every day he got down on his knees and shouted to heaven, "Please let today be the day I win!" After a year of no response, he went to his teacher to ask what he was doing wrong. His teacher asked him, "Did you buy a ticket?"

It's a great place to be when you recognize the existence of the Creator and learn how to humbly ask for help. But the secret to getting your prayers answered is this,

"God translates our prayers based on our actions." (Karen Berg, Simple Light)

Today, do an act of random kindness (especially for someone you don't like.) Resist the temptation to judge people. Go out of your way to help a co-worker. Cross the street to help a stranded stranger. Listen closely to someone you normally drown out. Grab hold of the infinite gifts to help people that the Light throws at you every moment of the day, and open them with gratitude. Every positive action, every restriction, every conscious effort to emulate the attributes of the Light will ensure that your prayers are heard, loud and clear.

Climbing High‏

Students who read about the kabbalist's ability to climb the ladder (HaSulam) up to the Upper Worlds often ask me how they can do the same.

What I tell them is what I will tell you today. Try removing your negative traits. Awaken repentance in your heart. Share with someone who is in need of love or friendship. Drop a few coins in a charity box. Next time you want to lose your temper, resist.

Do all of these and you will feel what it's like to ascend to the highest of spiritual worlds.

Why Weren't You You?‏

Rav Zusha [18th century Polish Kabbalist] was laying on his deathbed surrounded by his students. They were surprised to see him crying, and asked, "Why do you cry? You were almost as wise as Moses and as kind as Abraham."

He answered, "When I leave this world and appear before the Heavenly Court, they won't ask me, 'Zusha, why weren't you as smart as Moses or as good as Abraham?' They will ask, 'Zusha, why weren't you Zusha?"

We each have a destiny to fulfill, one that involves discovering our unique powers and sharing them with the world. Have you discovered yours?

Today, ask yourself the simple question: Where can I be doing more?

How Low Can You Go?‏

We all fall back, spiritually-speaking, from time to time. It's important to acknowledge where we messed up, but it's equally important to continue onwards. Too many of us get down on ourselves and give up all together.

The great kabbalist Rav Nachman said when he fell from the spiritual level he had attained, he did not feel depressed. He would just begin anew, as if he had never before stepped foot on the spiritual path. Sometimes he would have to begin anew several times in one day.

He also said that through depression and sadness a man can forget who and what he really is because his true essence is wrapped by so many layers of sadness. Therefore it is necessary to fight to be in a state of joy - no matter how low you have gone.

Restart your Kabbalah practice as if today were your first day. Forget about where you should be, or what you shouldn't be doing. Just smile, be happy and know that your joy is a restart button on the game of your life.

Do As I Say‏

We all have people in our life who won't do exactly as we tell them to do. What are they thinking, don't they know we have all the answers? Shame on these people!

OK, so when you encounter people today who aren't doing what you expect of them, who aren't acting the way they "should," follow the Ari's advice: Make sure you are the right messenger to deliver the message & put yourself in the other person's shoes. Would you be willing to do the same as what you are advising them to do?

Eyes On You

How often do you walk into a room feeling like all eyes are on you? Probably every room you walk into. It's our ego-centric nature to think everyone is thinking about us and giving us the evil eye.

I have news for you, most of us are too busy thinking about ourselves to have time to think about you!

Today, don't worry what "they" think of you, because "they're" busy worrying about what you think of "them".

Buy Yourself A Friend

"Buy yourself a friend," the kabbalistic sages advised. Sage advice.

We are often misunderstood when it comes to understanding our friendships. We think if we love someone, then we'll care about them. In fact it's the other way around. True friendship is built from the bricks and mortar of caring; from going the extra mile to making the effort to be genuine to believing in them when they have stopped believing in themselves.

Buy yourself a friend means earn your friend. Today, right now, put some loving into your most precious relationships. Give time, patience and effort - the hallmarks of a true friend.

Show Some Mercy‏

It's a law of the universe that judgment attracts judgment. If that's the frame of mind we consciously choose to be in, then that's what we'll create for ourselves.

What we really want to do is inject compassion, or what the Kabbalists call mercy, into every situation.

Does this mean we're supposed to roll over and let people treat us like garbage? Of course not. What it means is that when someone treats us badly, whether it is an accident or not, we ask why it's in our movie. Why is it happening to us, not from the standpoint of a victim, but rather so we can learn.

Today, go for the mercy rather than the judgment. The Light will show you the same in return.

We Can't Expect Others‏

There once was a woman whose young son was diabetic, and not only was her son a fan of sugar, but he was also a fan of Gandhi. The mother decided to seek out Gandhi's wisdom. She and her son rode a train for three days to seek the advice of the renowned spiritual leader.
When they arrived at his home, they waited on line for hours until they were finally invited to speak with him. Once the mother explained the story, Gandhi replied, "please come back in 30 days." Rather than travel back and forth, the woman and her son found temporary housing, and she took a job as a dishwasher at a local restaurant.
After 30 days, they returned to Gandhi, seeking his advice yet again. This time Gandhi stood up, held the boy by his shoulders, and said, "My son, you must stop eating sugar." The mother was enraged. "With all due respect, we traveled a great distance to seek your counsel, and this is all you have to tell us?" To which Gandhi replied, "Madam, I could not ask your son to do something that I myself could not do. Only yesterday was I able to completely cut sugar out of my diet."
Today's lesson is plain to see - we cannot expect others to do things we aren't able to do ourselves!
